Something Borrowed, Something Blue - My Engagement Story

What's that I hear? The sound of wedding bells? I'm engaged! Those of you who have been following this blog for a while may have heard of Tom. The behind the scenes technical other half of Heart & Sew, my partner and best friend. To avoid suspicion, Tom popped the question on his birthday, the 18th of February as he knew that's when I would never be expecting it... I know right? I thought I was the one planning the surprises that day but I got the biggest and loveliest surprise of all. Here's our engagement story!

First of all - a little background. I met Tom at a party sometime in March 2011. His best friend Lewis was dating my sister Natalie at the time and together they agreed that Tom and I were perfect for each other and should meet. This resulted in Tom somehow scoring an invite to a house warming party of a person he'd never met before - my best friend Shaun who had just moved out into his own place for the first time. We were introduced at the party briefly but we didn't hit it off right away, infact I didn't see or speak to him for the rest of the night. After that party however, Tom seemed to be at every social event I was invited to and, gradually, I unintentionally ended up spending more and more time with him. The more I got to know him, the more I liked him and somewhere along the way he ended up becoming one of my very good friends. We had similar interests and both loved the game World of Warcraft which we ended up regularly playing together - alot! Fast forward 5 and a half years, 2 drunken I love you's at my 22nd birthday party, a few dates, a couples holiday, moving into our first flat together and a joint bank account we arrive at Tom's 27th birthday...

I'd bought Tom an Xbox as a special birthday surprise. I was so proud of myself as the box was huge and I managed to keep it hidden away for over a month in my craft cupboard without it being discovered. I'd also secretly arranged for his best friend Lewis (the one who introduced us) to meet us at one of Tom's favourite restaurants that night for dinner. Lewis got married about a year ago and has moved a little bit away so they don't see each other often and Tom misses him a lot. I had all my surprises in place and was too busy focused on ensuring they actually stayed surprises that I didn't realise Tom was the one planning the biggest surprise of all!

Tom opened his present - he loved his Xbox - and when we arrived at the restaurant he actually was surprised when the hostess said "Booking for 3?" and not 2. He was delighted to see his long time best friend on his birthday and we really had a wondering time catching up with him. I did notice Tom looking at his phone quite a few times during the meal but I didn't think anything of it.  As we were saying our goodbyes Lewis asked what my plans were for the rest of the night. "Oh God, I can't wait to get out these heels and this dress and into my pyjamas. Then I'm gonna play Overwatch!" I laughed, rubbing my feet.

On the drive home Tom was very quiet and barely replying but I figured he was just tired, as was I. As we climbed the 4 flights of stairs to our front door I was rabbiting on about something to a basically non responsive Tom. We stopped at the front of the door and there was a pause where Tom should have been getting his key out - didn't he realise my pyjamas were calling me?!

"Are you going to open the door...?" I asked wearily.
"Actually...I have a secret to tell you" he replied quietly, turning his key in the lock.

As he opened the door I saw our hallway had been transformed and was definitely not the way we had left it. There were candles and rose petals scattered everywhere forming a trail that lead into our sitting room. Both shocked and very confused, I didn't really know how to react. What was at the end of this petal trail? I scanned my tired brain quickly. We had been talking recently about getting a dog, could it be a puppy? I set off delicately picking my way through the petal and candle trail to find out.

At the end of the trail surrounded by more petals and candles was a little green box holding the most beautiful, heart shaped diamond ring. It was so dark I couldn't see what it was at first. As my eyes made out what was glinting in the candlelight I gasped, throwing my hands to my mouth. Then, in the middle of our sitting room surrounded by candles, Tom got down on one knee and, saying I was the best birthday present he could ever have, asked me to marry him. My jaw was basically on the floor at this point. He had well and truly got me and I hadn't seen it coming. Of course I said yes. It was the happiest moment of my life. It's a moment a lot of little girls dream about growing up and my moment had been simple, thoughtful, private and perfect. I wouldn't change anything about it for the world.

Thank you to my friends and family who helped Tom plan the perfect proposal. My parents, Toms family and especially Natalie and Adam. They set up all the petals and candles and patiently waited for the word from Tom that we were nearly home so they could light them. It was also so nice that the two people (Natalie and Lewis) who introduced us could be part of our engagement day. I can't wait to start a new chapter in life with my best friend and my first and last love, Tom. I feel like the luckiest girl in the world.

Peace & love,
♥

  2. Congratulations!

I've been engaged since last October too. My engagement story also took place at home privately. I came home alone and followed a path of rose petals to a decorated living room. A note told me to sit down. Then the TV went on and an animated film starts. It showed the whole previous relationship of mine and my friend. At the end of the video my friend came into the room, got on his knees and asked me the question.

I am very happy for you and understand well, what a beautiful feeling that was. :)

    Kind regards

  15. A diamond girdle can be described as the outer edge of the gemstone; it’s where the crown, also known as the top part of the diamond, meets the pavilion, which is the bottom part of the anatomy of a diamond.
